Course Information

Identify defects. Maintain equipment. Support safer work at height.

Height safety equipment must be safe, traceable and fit for use.

This practical course teaches learners how to inspect and maintain height safety equipment. Learners will identify damage, wear and other defects. They will also learn when equipment must be removed from service.

The course also covers basic maintenance and inspection records.

Training and assessment align with NZQA Unit Standard 19359 – Identify, inspect and maintain height safety equipment, Level 3, 3 credits.

Course Outcomes

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

• Identify industrial rope access and height safety equipment.
• Find and follow manufacturer instructions.
• Identify inspection and maintenance requirements.
• Inspect equipment for damage, wear and deterioration.
• Reject damaged or worn equipment.
• Carry out maintenance in line with manufacturer instructions.
• Record inspections in an equipment register or logbook.
• Record completed maintenance.

• Safety harnesses.
• Lanyards.
• Energy absorbers.
• Karabiners and connectors.
• Ropes and slings.
• Ascenders and descenders.
• Pulley wheels.
• Fall-arrest devices.
• Backup devices.
• Safety helmets.
• Other height safety equipment.

The equipment used may vary between courses.

Standards and Industry Alignment

The course follows current manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.

Training also takes account of relevant legislation, standards and industry guidance. This includes:

• The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
• WorkSafe New Zealand guidance.
• The AS/NZS 1891 series.
• AS/NZS 1891.4 for the selection, use and maintenance of personal height safety equipment.
• Relevant industrial rope access guidance.

Current requirements will apply at the time of training.

Please Note

This course covers the inspection and maintenance tasks included in Unit Standard 19359.

Specialist repairs and internal servicing of sealed fall-arrest devices require additional training. The inspection or certification of permanent anchor systems may also require specialist competence.
