Course Category: WTC | Network Safety Training

NZQA: 10508, 12300, 18038, 10507

The course is designed for telecommunications workers, contractors and other personnel whose work may place them near electricity supply assets. Learners develop an understanding of electricity supply systems, electrical hazards, health and safety responsibilities, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and the key safety requirements that apply when working around electricity infrastructure.

Training covers identification of common electricity supply systems and network components, safe working practices, hazard and risk management, electrical safety distances, PPE requirements, and relevant electricity industry legislation, codes and industry guidance including SM-EI.

The Besafe WTC1 programme includes the following NZQA unit standards:

  • US 10507 – Use personal protective equipment in an electricity supply environment – Level 2, 4 credits.
  • US 10508 – Identify electricity systems used in the electricity supply industry – Level 2, 6 credits.
  • US 18038 – Describe health and safety duties on electricity supply sites – Level 2, 5 credits.
  • US 12300 – Demonstrate knowledge of safety statutes and codes used in the electricity supply industry – Level 2, 6 credits.

Assessment includes theory and practical activities appropriate to the unit standards. On successful completion, achieved unit standards are reported to NZQA and learners receive a Besafe Training course certificate.

On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify common electricity supply systems, electric lines, operating voltages, conductors, cables and network structures.
  • Recognise electrical hazards and understand appropriate controls when working around electricity supply infrastructure.
  • Describe the health and safety duties of PCBUs and workers on electricity supply sites.
  • Select, inspect, use and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Understand relevant electricity industry legislation, safety requirements, codes and industry guidance.
  • Apply the foundational electrical safety knowledge expected of workers operating in or around the Chorus network.

NZQA: 10509, 17025, 23229

WTC3 is designed for telecommunications workers and contractors who need to safely access electrical structures and undertake work on overhead network infrastructure.

Besafe Training’s WTC3 course is structured to align with the Work Type Competency requirements associated with overhead telecommunications network work, including pole access, working at height, electrical hazards and emergency rescue.

The course combines practical pole climbing and work-at-height skills with the knowledge required to recognise and manage hazards associated with working around electricity network structures. Learners develop competency in inspecting and preparing structures for access, selecting and using appropriate fall-protection equipment, maintaining safe working practices around electrical infrastructure, and responding to an emergency involving a worker on a pole or structure.

What You Will Learn

Learners will develop the knowledge and practical skills to:

  • Identify hazards associated with overhead telecommunications and electricity network infrastructure.
  • Inspect poles and structures before climbing or commencing work.
  • Prepare for and safely undertake work at height.
  • Select, inspect and correctly use harnesses, climbing and fall-protection equipment.
  • Climb and work safely on electricity network structures.
  • Apply safe working practices when operating around overhead electrical assets.
  • Understand relevant approach distances and electrical safety requirements.
  • Plan for emergencies and carry out a rescue from an electrical structure.

Pole Top Rescue Only

Workers who do not require the complete WTC3 pathway can book our dedicated Pole Top Rescue training, which focuses specifically on pole climbing and rescue from an electrical structure.
