What Is Refresher Training?

Refresher training is designed to help workers maintain current knowledge, practical skills, and safe working practices after completing an initial training course.

In many industries, workers perform high-risk tasks that require ongoing competency and awareness. Over time, workplace practices, legislation, equipment, and site expectations can change. Refresher training helps ensure workers continue to perform tasks safely and confidently.

Why Refresher Training Is Important

Regular refresher training helps workers and organisations maintain safe work practices and demonstrate ongoing competency.

  • Maintain practical competency
  • Reinforce safe work behaviours
  • Refresh emergency response knowledge
  • Keep workers familiar with updated procedures and equipment
  • Support workplace and site compliance requirements
  • Reduce workplace risk and incidents

Do NZQA Unit Standards Expire?

NZQA unit standards achieved by learners remain on their NZQA Record of Learning and do not expire. Refresher training is completed to help maintain current industry knowledge, practical skills, and workplace competency.

BeSafe Training Refresher Timeframes

0–2 Years Since Previous Training

Learners are generally considered current and can complete a refresher course.

2–3 Years Since Previous Training

Training may be considered expired by some employers or sites; however, learners may still be eligible for refresher training rather than repeating the full initial course.

More Than 3 Years Since Previous Training

Learners are generally required to complete the full initial course again unless employer verification confirms continued competency in the workplace.

First Aid

First Aid refresher training should generally be completed within two years and three months of previous training to maintain currency.

Employer Verification Option

Where a learner is outside standard refresher timeframes, BeSafe Training may allow enrolment into refresher training if an employer can verify that the learner:

  • Is actively working in the relevant task or industry area
  • Continues to regularly perform the work
  • Is currently considered competent in the workplace

Approval remains at the discretion of BeSafe Training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some sites require refresher training?

Many employers, clients, and principal contractors require workers to demonstrate recent competency for higher-risk work activities. Refresher training is commonly used as a method of demonstrating currency, helping confirm that workers continue to maintain current knowledge, practical skills, and familiarity with safe work practices, procedures, and industry expectations.

Can refresher training be completed online?

Some refresher courses are available online or through blended delivery models.

What if my previous training is over three years old?

You may need to complete the full initial course again unless workplace experience and employer verification support refresher eligibility.

What do I need to provide to enrol on a refresher course?

Learners are generally required to provide evidence of previous or initial training completed within the applicable refresher timeframe. This may include certificates, NZQA Record of Learning evidence, wallet cards, or other training documentation.

Am I guaranteed to pass the refresher course?

No. There is no guarantee of achieving a successful outcome from refresher training. The assessor will make this decision on the day of training based on the learner’s demonstrated knowledge, practical competency, and overall performance during the course. If you are unsure about your current competency or have not regularly performed the task, it may be more appropriate to complete the full initial course again to help achieve the best training outcome.
