Course Category: r_Working at Heights Stage 3 - Blended

NZQA: 23229, 15757, 25045

Complete working at heights training, including harness use and temporary fall arrest systems.

Working at Heights Stage 3 provides the broader practical skills workers need to use a safety harness system and set up, use and take down temporary fall arrest systems when working at height.

The two-day course includes all Stage 2 training and assessment, then builds on these skills with practical training in temporary horizontal and vertical fall arrest systems.

Delivery options are available in person or blended, giving learners the flexibility to complete the course in the format that best suits their workplace and schedule.

Training and assessment are completed against:

NZQA US23229 – Use a safety harness system when working at height Level 3 | 4 credits

NZQA US15757 – Use, install and disestablish temporary proprietary height safety systems when working at height Level 3 | 4 credits

Who Should Attend?

Stage 3 is suitable for workers who regularly work at height and need broader practical capability than harness use alone.

This may include workers in:

  • Construction
  • Civil and infrastructure
  • Maintenance
  • Utilities
  • Manufacturing and industrial environments
  • Roofing and building services
  • Facilities maintenance

Stage 3 is particularly suited to workers who may need to set up, use or take down temporary fall arrest systems rather than simply connect into an existing system that has already been established for them.

For workers whose role and experience support this level of training, Stage 3 is generally the more complete Working at Heights pathway.

What You Will Learn

Stage 3 includes all of the Stage 2 training and assessment, including:

  • Hazards associated with working at height
  • Harnesses and fall protection equipment
  • Pre-use inspection of harnesses and associated equipment
  • Correct harness fitting and adjustment
  • Safe connection to fall protection systems
  • Appropriate anchor points and connection methods
  • Equipment compatibility and limitations
  • Safe use of a harness where a fall hazard exists
  • Suspension and fall hazards
  • Rescue arrangements and emergency procedures

Learners then build on these skills with practical training covering:

  • Selecting and preparing fall protection equipment
  • Identifying suitable anchor points
  • Setting up temporary horizontal fall arrest systems
  • Setting up temporary vertical fall arrest systems
  • Checking systems before use
  • Using temporary fall arrest systems safely
  • Working within established height safety plans
  • Taking systems down safely
  • Checking and storing equipment after use

Practical exercises allow learners to demonstrate the correct use of harness equipment and temporary fall arrest systems in a controlled training environment.

Why Choose Stage 3?

Stage 3 provides the complete two-day Working at Heights pathway.

It includes:

Stage 2 – Day 1
Use a harness and connect into an existing fall protection system.

Stage 3 – Day 2
Build on those skills by learning how to set up, use and take down temporary fall arrest systems.

Because Stage 3 includes all Stage 2 training and assessment, learners booking the full Stage 3 programme do not need to book Stage 2 separately.

Choose Stage 3 if:

Your work may require you to:

  • Wear and use a safety harness
  • Connect into existing fall protection systems
  • Set up temporary fall arrest systems
  • Work with temporary horizontal or vertical systems
  • Select and prepare fall protection equipment
  • Establish systems for a specific work activity
  • Take down and check systems after use
  • Have broader practical working-at-height capability

For workers who regularly work at height, Stage 3 is generally the recommended training pathway where their experience and work requirements are suitable.

Optional US25045 Add-On

NZQA US25045 – Employ height safety equipment in the workplace can be added to Stage 3 on request for eligible learners.

This option requires additional workplace-based evidence following the course, as learners must demonstrate the required competencies in a genuine workplace environment.

If US25045 is required, please discuss this with the Besafe Training team before booking so we can confirm suitability and the post-course evidence requirements.

Entry Requirements

Learners completing the full Stage 3 programme complete the Stage 2 component before progressing to the US15757 training and assessment.

Stage 3 learners should have relevant working-at-height experience and be physically capable of participating safely in practical working-at-height activities. Relevant experience means the learner has had exposure to work environments where working at height is performed, planned, supervised, or controlled.

Learners who already hold US23229 may be eligible to attend the US15757 component only.

Company Training

Company bookings are available at a Besafe Training Centre or at your workplace where suitable facilities and equipment are available.
