As we move further into winter, those conditions change quickly.
Wind picks up. Ground gets softer. Surfaces stay wet longer. And the same scissor lift or knuckle boom that performed reliably in summer now needs more attention before, during, and between every use.
Where risk builds
MEWP incidents don’t usually start with operator error – they build from small changes that go unchecked:
- Wind speeds creeping toward the machine’s manufacturer limit
- Soft, saturated, or uneven ground under wheels and outriggers
- Slippery platform surfaces from rain or condensation
- Operators familiar with one machine being asked to use another
- Pre-start checks getting shorter as the weather gets worse
Each one is small on its own. Stacked together, they erode the margin you rely on at height.
Two machines, two different risk profiles
Most height tasks across NZ worksites are completed using one of two MEWP types, each with its own considerations:
Scissor lifts
- A large platform area means a bigger “sail” in the wind
- Many models have strict wind ratings – indoor-only units shouldn’t be used outdoors regardless of conditions
- Stability depends heavily on a level, firm surface
Self-propelled boom lifts (Knuckle Booms)
- Greater reach and articulation, but also a higher centre of gravity
- More susceptible to wind effects the further the boom is extended
- Ground loading at the wheels can be significant – soft or sloping ground is a serious hazard
In both cases, the manufacturer’s data plate and operator’s manual are the source of truth – not assumptions or past experience on a different model.
Focus Areas for Operators and Site Supervisors
Before sending a MEWP up this winter, ask:
- Have pre-start checks been completed in line with the operator’s manual?
- Is the wind speed within the machine’s rated limit – and is someone monitoring it?
- Has the ground been assessed for firmness, slope, and underground services?
- Is the operator familiarised with this specific machine, not just the type?
- Is there a clear rescue plan if the operator becomes incapacitated at height?
