WTC1 – Electrical Supply Industry

Course Information

The course is designed for telecommunications workers, contractors and other personnel whose work may place them near electricity supply assets. Learners develop an understanding of electricity supply systems, electrical hazards, health and safety responsibilities, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and the key safety requirements that apply when working around electricity infrastructure.

Training covers identification of common electricity supply systems and network components, safe working practices, hazard and risk management, electrical safety distances, PPE requirements, and relevant electricity industry legislation, codes and industry guidance including SM-EI.

The Besafe WTC1 programme includes the following NZQA unit standards:

  • US 10507 – Use personal protective equipment in an electricity supply environment – Level 2, 4 credits.
  • US 10508 – Identify electricity systems used in the electricity supply industry – Level 2, 6 credits.
  • US 18038 – Describe health and safety duties on electricity supply sites – Level 2, 5 credits.
  • US 12300 – Demonstrate knowledge of safety statutes and codes used in the electricity supply industry – Level 2, 6 credits.

Assessment includes theory and practical activities appropriate to the unit standards. On successful completion, achieved unit standards are reported to NZQA and learners receive a Besafe Training course certificate.

On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify common electricity supply systems, electric lines, operating voltages, conductors, cables and network structures.
  • Recognise electrical hazards and understand appropriate controls when working around electricity supply infrastructure.
  • Describe the health and safety duties of PCBUs and workers on electricity supply sites.
  • Select, inspect, use and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Understand relevant electricity industry legislation, safety requirements, codes and industry guidance.
  • Apply the foundational electrical safety knowledge expected of workers operating in or around the Chorus network.

Applies to

Telecommunications technicians, civil workers, contractors, field service personnel and other workers who require Chorus WTC1 competency or who work in or around electricity supply infrastructure associated with the Chorus network.

Entry Requirements

Learners must hold current first aid competency meeting Chorus WTC1 requirements. This is commonly evidenced through NZQA Unit Standards 6401 and 6402. If you hold alternative or newer NZQA first aid standards, please contact Besafe Training before booking so eligibility can be confirmed. Learners must also have sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy skills to understand course material and complete the required assessments.
