Our Rigging & Slinging: Direct Crane Operations course (Unit Standard 3789) is designed for workers needing to safely sling varied regular loads and direct a crane during lifting operations. Delivered in person by experienced instructors, this one-day course provides a mix of theory and practical tasks that meet industry expectations in a supported, safety-first environment.
You’ll gain essential skills in hazard management, communication methods, lift planning, and the correct use of rigging equipment. This course is ideal for those working toward Dogman responsibilities or preparing for more advanced crane operation standards.
Post-course requirement: To complete the unit standard, students must log a minimum of 40 verified lifts across at least six variations. Each lift must be signed off by a supervisor or manager. We provide an evidence booklet to guide this process, and there is no time limit to complete the log – it’s flexible to suit your work environment.

- Seeking formal recognition of their rigging and slinging experience.
- Preparing to move into more advanced crane operation training.
Prerequisite:
US30072 – Demonstrate and apply knowledge of slinging regular loads safely
Entry Requirements:
Minimum three months of relevant industry experience. Evidence can include:
- Verification letter from the employer
- Work logbook or record of experience signed by the manager
- Reference letter from a supervisor or Manager outlining students experience, skills and competency over a three-month period

Course Content
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Plan lifting operations with appropriate risk management and hazard controls.
- Demonstrate the difference between regular and irregular loads.
- Use rigging gear correctly: slings, shackles, taglines, packing, and dunnage.
- Communicate using crane industry standards and signals.
- Safely sling and direct at least two types of loads.
Assessment Methods:
- Written assessment
- Practical demonstration
- Workplace-based lift log (40 lifts minimum, including two observed by assessor)
Equipment Requirements
We supply certified rigging and slinging equipment. For on-site or off-site delivery, your organisation will need:
On-site Delivery:
- Excavator (min 3.5 tonne) or 2-tonne gantry
- Chain or webbing slings
- Shackles, hooks, eye bolts
- Taglines and packing
- Certified lifting points
Off-site Delivery: We can deliver this course at your site with appropriate lifting equipment in place. Please call us to confirm requirements.
PPE Requirements
All students must bring:
- Safety boots
