Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP)

Course Information

Our course provides the essential knowledge and hands-on training required to safely operate a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP).

With the choice of completing either:

  • Scissor Lift Only, or

  • Scissor Lift + Self-Propelled Boom Lift

Other MEWP types (e.g. trailer-mounted) are available by request.

Delivered by experienced tutors, this course blends classroom learning with a focus on practical operation, ensuring you develop the skills, confidence, and awareness to operate MEWPs safely and in accordance with New Zealand regulations.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Health and safety responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act

  • Identifying and selecting appropriate MEWP types

  • Pre-start inspections, hazard identification, and risk controls

  • Emergency procedures and safe operating techniques

  • Practical operation of MEWPs under assessor supervision

  • Worksite communication and task documentation

Course Delivery:
Delivered face-to-face at our training facility (or onsite for company bookings), this full-day course combines theory and practical assessment. You’ll complete a hands-on session using a scissor lift, or a scissor lift and boom lift, depending on the selected option. Other MEWP types (e.g. trailer-mounted, vertical lifts) are available by request.

Applies to

Operators working with elevated work platforms in construction, infrastructure, warehousing, or maintenance. Suitable for new operators or those requiring certification renewal.

Entry Requirements

To ensure participants are adequately prepared for the MEWP training, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • For all boom-type MEWP's: Participants must hold NZQA Unit Standard 23229 (Use a safety harness for personal fall prevention when working at height) or equivalent. This ensures a basic understanding of fall protection when operating at height. Evidence is required at enrolment.
  • Industry Experience: A minimum of six months of relevant work experience in the industry may be required prior to enrolling in this course. This experience ensures that participants have foundational knowledge and practical exposure to the work environment.
